Smoking cannabis increase the risk of stroke and heart failure risk
The Class B drug was associated with a significantly increased risk for stroke, heart failure, coronary artery disease and sudden cardiac death.
It was also linked with a variety of factors known to increase cardiovascular risk, such as obesity, high blood pressure, smoking and alcohol use
Yet the drug carried a higher risk even after accounting for demographic factors, other health conditions and lifestyle risk factors such as smoking tobacco and drinking.
As many countries look to legalise the drug or to prescribe it medically to alleviate symptoms of other diseases, the study sheds new light on how the drug affects cardiovascular health.
Heart expert Dr Aditi Kalla at the Einstein Medical Centre in Philadelphia said: “Like all other drugs, whether they're prescribed or not prescribed, we want to know the effects and side effects of this drug
“It's important for physicians to know these effects so we can better educate patients, such as those who are inquiring about the safety of cannabis or even asking for a prescription for cannabis.“

Previous studies has focused on the harm caused to the lungs or mental state by marijuana use.
The new study based on medical records from the Nationwide Inpatient Sample compiled from a fifth of all US health centres was one of only a handful to investigate cardiovascular outcomes.
It analysed over 20 million records of young and middle-aged patients aged between 18 and 55 who were discharged from 1,000 hospitals in 2009 and 2010, when marijuana use was illegal in most states
