Broccoli SUPERFOOD: Eating it may prevent CANCER and DIABETES as well as tackling obesity

EATING broccoli reduces obesity as well as preventing cancer and diabetes, suggests new research.

Broccoli

Eating broccoli could prevent cancer and diabetes as well as tackling obesity
The study by Japanese scientists discovered that a chemical in broccoli - already hailed as a 'superfood' for its cancer preventing properties - slowed weight gain in mice.
The researchers said sulforaphane, a chemical compound contained in broccoli at relatively high concentrations, has been known to exert effects of cancer prevention by activating a transcription factor which regulates the balance of oxidation.

Bone cancer is a rare type of cancer - it affects just over 500 people every year.
Most cases of bone cancer develop in the long bones of the legs or upper arms.
The most common symptoms of the disease is a persistent pain which gets worse over time, and like arthritis can get worse at night.

NHS Choices said: “The pain can sometimes be wrongly mistaken for arthritis in adults and growing pains in children and teenagers.”

Other symptoms of bone cancer can include swelling and redness over a bone which can make movement challenging.
This could also be mistaken for gout, an uncomfortable, inflammatory condition that occurs when needle-like crystals of uric acid form within certain joints or soft tissues.
Gout - which is a form of arthritis - can be associated with a rich diet which can be altered to avoid the condition.
Other symptoms of bones cancer include a lump over a bone, or a weak bone which fracture more easily than normal.

Lack of sleep warning: Not snoozing enough can make kids 'fat and hyperactive'
A third of 16-year-olds and a quarter of 14-year-olds are not getting enough sleep.
As a result, youngsters suffer weight-gain, anxiety and attention deficit disorder, neuro-psychologist Ed de Bruin said.
He explained: "Lack of sleep can cause a multitude of problems. Children become irritable and, further down the scale, depression can set in.

"It can lead to anxiety or attention deficit syndrome. School results suffer and lack of sleep also makes children fatter."
Sleep researcher Hans Hamburger added: "A chronic lack of sleep is making children fat, stupid and hyper active.
"Teens tend to stay up later because of hormonal changes. But that is not compatible with getting up early to go to school.
"They sleep late during the weekend but all this is creating havoc with their biological clock. But why girls suffer more than boys is unclear.

Take hormone replacement therapy and you will live longer, women told

WOMEN on hormone replacement therapy are likely to live longer, according to new research. And those using HRT to relieve the symptoms of the menopause were also less likely to have potentially fatal blocked arteries.

New research has found that women on hormone replacement therapy live longer
The study showed lower levels of atherosclerosis - plaque build-up in the arteries - in women on HRT compared to women not using hormone therapy,
HRT is controversial as while some studies have associated it with health benefits such as lowering the risk of osteoporosis and improving heart health, others have linked it to cancer and strokes.
The new study bolsters evidence that the therapy, which involves oestrogen suplements often accompanied by progesterone or similar hormones, may help improve heart health and overall survival in some women.
Oestrogen is thought to protect the heart because it lowers cholesterol and increases the flexibility of blood vessels, allowing them to accommodate blood flow.
Study lead author Doctor Yoav Arnson, of Cedars-Sinai Medical Centre in the US, said: "With proper screening and proper follow-up, from a cardiovascular standpoint I believe it is beneficial to take hormone replacement therapy.

Screening tests are offered to people in England over the age of sixty - but knowing the symptoms could help save lives.
